It is reasonable to say that people nowadays have access to a greater amount of digital content and media on a daily basis. Although this means that there is good reason for companies and businesses to invest in online and digital advertising, it does not mean they should restrict it to this as there are still older forms of advertising that are still effective. Outdoor advertising for instance, is as effective now as it ever has been. In the following article we look at just some of the innovative outdoor advertising campaigns that have been used by some of the world’s biggest and popular brands.
Bic Razor
Sometimes the old adage “less is more” is worth remembering when advertising a well-known product There were billboard campaigns for Bic razors that consisted of a billboard with a giant razor standing against it and a line of freshly cut grass trailing away from the razor, giving the illusion that the razor had cut the grass.
Formula Toothcare
The oral hygiene and toothpaste brand Formula Toothcare ran a billboard campaign that seemed to show a man tearing and peeling back the metal of the billboard with his teeth. They were obviously trying to show that using their toothpaste would improve the strength and health of your teeth and it worked.
The hair dye brand Kolestron Naturals ran an outdoor advertisement that was deliberately positioned on a promenade with an unobstructed view of the skyline and sea behind it. It featured an image of a woman’s head with die cut where the hair should be to show the natural variations of the range of colours of dye available by utilising the natural colouring of the sky behind through day to night.
Apolosophy
The advertising company Akestam Holst worked in conjunction with the production company Stopp to make a truly magnificent, almost interactive digital outdoor advertisement in a Swedish subway. It was advertising a line of Apolosophy hair care products. The advertisement had sensors that triggered the advert into action when trains entered the station and showed the woman’s hair blowing around as if being moved by the gust of air that followed the train.
Beauty Bazaar Campaign for Harvey Nichols
Harvey Nicholls as a brand are known for their edgy advertising and the advert for their Beauty Bazaar at the Liverpool branch was no different. It featured the slogan “Love Thyself” and consisted of an image of a model about to kiss a version of her own face in full make-up.
Meet Britain’s Leading Ladies for Marks and Spencer
Showing that sometimes it pays to pay, the Marks And Spencer campaign for its autumn/winter clothing range one year consisted of transforming the outside of stores up and down the country into galleries of the most inspirational women in the country, photographed by Annie Lelbovitz. Ladies included were Darcy Bussell, Nicola Adams, Tracey Emin and Dame Helen Mirren.
It is easy to think that everything that was effective 20 years ago is no longer effective in this modern day and age, but sometimes there is a ring of truth to the phrase “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” The reality is that outdoor advertising, as it embraces technological advances, is just as vital and effective now as it ever was in the past.
