House by House: “Game of Thrones” Costume Makeup Tips

House by House Game of Thrones Costume Makeup TipsWhile halloween costumes go a long way towards helping you look like your favorite Game of Thrones character, it’s nothing without finishing the job up with makeup and hairstyling. You wouldn’t think that the men and women of Westeros would spend a lot of time in front of a mirror, especially Jon Snow, but they do. Here’s how to capture the look.

Getting The Hair Color Right

hair color is an important consideration, if you haven’t noticed. It’s not enough to have the Melisandre Cloak. You also have to have the red hair to match. In other words, the hair is part of the Melisandre costume, for example.

But, it’s like that for all of the characters. They all have strong colors, with a lot of them sporting red hair. Sure, there are a fair number of brown haired guys and gals, but think about the major players and the characters that tend to stand out the most, even when they’re not center stage. They all have vibrant hair colors. Consider dying yours.

Get A Wig

If you don’t want to go to the extremes of dying your hair, you can always wear a wig. It’s a little more expensive, but it’s not nearly as permanent.

Decide If You Want To Be Clean Or Dirty

In GOT, there are a lot of peasants. Even without peasants, some of the main characters don’t look like they’ve bathed in weeks. How do they pull it off? With products like VO5 Matte Clay, Fudge, and dirt powder (yes, that’s a real makeup product).

The Makeup

OK, now for the makeup. What you use depends entirely on what kind of look you’re going for. If you want the clean Sansa look, you’re going to use something like L’Oreal Paris Total Repair 5 Extraordinary Oil for the hair. For the face, use Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in light for the face. For the lips, you’re going to use a highlighter with a pinkish hue. Ditto for the cheeks. The exact color is the Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Highlighter Stick in Persian Sunset. For the Mascara, use Intense I-color Volumizing from Almay – Mocha.

For someone like Arya, you’re going to want something like Fresh Seaberry Face Oil and maybe a light lip coloring. Arya has full eyebrows, which you can replicate with Anastasia Brow Wiz in Brunette.

If you want to take on the role of the lovely Daenerys Targaryen, you’ll need something like the NARS Narskin Aqua Gel Luminous Mask to start off with. It’ll help give your face the plumpness you need to mimic Emilia Clarke’s naturally cherubic cheeks. Follow it up with Shiseido’s ultra-luxe Future Solution LX Superior Radiance Serum. As for the color, you’re going to go for warm neutrals, because this is mostly what she wears in the show.

Estee Lauder makes some nice stuff for bow lifting, and M.A.C. has awesome eyeshadows that will fit the bill. Finally, the lipstick. You’ll want to use Lancôme Rouge in Love in 243M Belle Aurore. That should complete the look enough for one night.
