The Damage Caused to Your Home by Clogged Guttering

Although we normally discuss beauty tips and advice, if you are as house-proud as we are, it never hurts to think about how to better look after your home. There are likely many things that you know you need to do to look after it. It may be (and should be) the case that you already know to care for the land around the property and to regularly inspect the foundations.

However, do you see inspecting and caring for your gutters as important? If not, you should because believe it or not, clogged gutters are mistaken for being a small and insignificant issue. When really, they can cause a lot of damage to your home. A lot of damage that can be expensive to fix.

In the following post we are going to discuss just what can happen if you don’t have your gutters cleaned regularly and they are left to get clogged and overflow.

Leaking Roof

The biggest sign that there are problems with your gutters is your roof is leaking constantly. Even if this is just a small leak, it should not be ignored. When your gutters are not functioning properly, the water then sits on the top of the property until there is too much. This then results in water dripping from the ceiling on the interior of your home. These leaks will not stop and will continue to get worse, unless you deal with the excess water issue and have your guttering cleaned and cleared.

Water Damage and Mould

If the standing water persists then eventually mould will begin to grow and spread. You will soon know you have a problem with mould when you see the easily identifiable black marks and a musty smell in the loft space and on the walls and ceiling in your home. When mould can form and breed, it can be expensive to sort. As well as mould, water can cause parts of your home to erode and rot away, like the wood. Eventually, the structural integrity is compromised.

Compromised Foundations

The whole purpose of your guttering is to protect your home in general, but more specifically the roof and the foundations. When the water doesn’t drain away from your property, but instead spills over and collects around the foundations, this can result in serious damage to them.

Property Landscape and Yard Will Suffer

If you work hard in your garden and have shrubs, flower beds and grass that you take care of, you should be keenly aware of the condition of your gutters. When gutters overflow, they cause the water to wash over and flood your plants. Puddles may start to form on your lawn, and it could be that you must replant any grass that’s far too damaged and unable to grow.

Reduce Your Roof’s Lifespan

Roofs, generally, will last anything from 15 to 30 years. It can be expensive to replace a roof. Therefore, it’s crucial that you get as long out of your roof as possible. One of the things that will greatly reduce the lifespan of your roof is water damage caused by clogged up guttering.
