Apply Sunscreen and Aftersun

Whenever you intend on going out in the sun, whether you’re on holiday or in your home country, it’s vital that you get into the habit of applying sunscreen and aftersun. This will protect your skin from those harmful UV rays providing you use the correct SPF, and also stop you from peeling and getting dry, tight skin.

Stay out of the Sun Between 10am and 3pm

This is the time when the sun is at it’s hottest, so avoid lounging in the sun at this time if you can. If you must go out at this time, wear protective clothing, drink plenty of water, and apply sunscreen liberally.

Wear a Hat and Sunglasses

A hat can protect your scalp and face from burning, while sunglasses stop you from squinting as you go about your day. That’s right; they aren’t just trendy fashion accessories, they have a purpose!

Don’t Forget to Moisturise

Moisturising is very important, as the sun can sometimes make your skin feel leathery. Always apply moisturiser after a bath or shower.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

Exfoliation helps to get rid of dead skin cells and reveals glowing new ones underneath so you should do this twice a week at least. This will help if you’re peeling too, just be careful you don’t overdo it and scrub your skin raw.

Eat Plenty of Natural Produce

Lots of water, fruit, and vegetables will help to nourish you in the summer and give you a lovely glow! There’s no reason to stop doing this when summer is over either, continue and you will be a much healthier version of yourself.

Change Your Skincare Routine

With the changing seasons, we may need to change our skincare routine too. Something that once worked a treat for us may now make us come out in spots, and that’s ok – it’s normal! The important thing to do is to find something that works for us with each season. This may be something as simple as changing the soap you’ve been using to a new product, such as Akamuti’s high quality African black soap.

Keep an Eye on Any Moles

When we spend more time in the sun, it’s essential we keep an eye on any moles and skin tags. These can sometimes change shape/colour when exposed to the sun, so if yours does, get medical attention right away. To help you know for sure, take photographs to monitor them and compare them, or download this app to keep track of them.

There’s no question about it; you simply can’t avoid this advice come summer if you want to look and feel amazing!
