How to buy underwear for a man

BeckhamIt is well known that men are not great when it comes to shopping, so sometimes it is easier if their other halves give them a helping hand. Women know that dressing well and feeling good starts with their underwear, and the same should go for men.

Men’s underwear

On average, statistics have shown that men buy a complete set of new underwear only once every eight years. Fashion gurus believe that a man should have at least ten pairs of underwear at any one time, but the only way to achieve this may be by letting a woman do the buying.

Studies have been made into men’s buying habits, and it seems that for the first 19 years of their lives, men are quite happy to let their mothers purchase their undergarments. Between 19 and 23 years old, they have a tendency to buy it for themselves; the thinking being that they are not in long-term relationships so cannot ask their girlfriends to buy such intimate items. After that, when their girlfriends become fixtures, men go back to letting the woman in their lives do their shopping for them.

Men’s underwear used to be rather limited, with only boxer, jockey or V-style briefs available. Now though, the underwear market has opened up considerably and there are plenty to choose from. Of course, if women are doing the buying, the chances are high that they are going to be buying as much for themselves as for their man. So women who are after men’s hot cheap lingerie may prefer to give their men thongs to wear, novelty or otherwise, to make the undressing more interesting, but for ordinary everyday wear, there are three things to consider when buying underwear for a man, and they are, most importantly, comfort, which can then dictate the style, and finally, the color or pattern.

When buying for a man, it is a good idea to go for a variety of styles that are suitable for different activities. There are times when men will need underwear that is going to give them some support for certain tasks, such as when they are exercising, but there are also times when they are going to want to relax and feel a bit freer, and this is where a pair of boxers excels. A good middle ground is boxer briefs, which give the wearer support but are less fitted than briefs. White used to be the predominant color amongst men’s underwear, but now, more than two thirds of all underwear sold to men is made up of dyed, solid colors or patterns.

There are some rules when it comes to men’s underwear. Boxers are great with jeans but terrible with suits, as they can make pants look baggy. It also used to be quite the fashion to show off designer underwear by having the waistband or label showing above trousers, but this is a thing of the past. Underwear these days should be kept hidden.
